James David Wolfensohn was an Australian-American lawyer, investment banker, and economist who served as the ninth president of the World Bank Group from 1995 to 2005. During his tenure, he focused on fighting global poverty and corruption, significantly expanding the Bank's development programs. Before his time at the World Bank, he had a distinguished career in finance, including senior positions at Salomon Brothers in New York. A dedicated philanthropist and patron of the arts, Wolfensohn was also an Olympic fencer for Australia in the 1956 Summer Olympics.
