James Kent was a preeminent American jurist and legal scholar whose work profoundly shaped American law in the early 19th century. He served as the first professor of law at Columbia College and later became Chief Justice of the New York Supreme Court and Chancellor of New York. After his judicial career, he authored the highly influential multi-volume work, 'Commentaries on American Law', which became a foundational text for legal education.
