James Connolly

Revolutionary Leader

James Connolly was a prominent Irish republican and socialist leader, born in Edinburgh, Scotland, to Irish parents. A key figure in the Irish trade union movement, he co-founded the Irish Citizen Army in 1913 to defend workers from police brutality. He was one of the primary leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising against British rule in Ireland. For his role in the uprising, Connolly was executed by a British firing squad, becoming a martyr for Irish independence and socialism.
