Jacques-Henri Lartigue

Photographer

Jacques-Henri Lartigue was a celebrated French photographer and painter renowned for his dynamic and spontaneous images of life in the early 20th century. He began taking photographs as a child, capturing his wealthy family's world, including early aviators and automobile races, with an infectious joy and wonder. Although he considered himself primarily a painter, his photographic work was not widely recognized until a 1963 exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York when he was 69. His lifelong visual diary provides an intimate and joyful chronicle of the Belle Époque and the dawn of modernity.
