Sir Isaiah Berlin was a British social and political theorist, philosopher, and historian of ideas. Born in Riga, Russian Empire, he was the first Jew to be elected to a prize fellowship at All Souls College, Oxford. He is best known for his essay 'Two Concepts of Liberty,' which distinguishes between positive and negative liberty. His work on the Counter-Enlightenment and his development of value pluralism have been highly influential in modern political philosophy.
