Indra Devi, born Eugenie Peterson in the Russian Empire, was a pioneering yoga teacher often called the 'First Lady of Yoga'. After studying under the renowned guru Sri Tirumalai Krishnamacharya in India, she became one of the first Western women to teach yoga internationally. She opened a yoga studio in Hollywood in 1947, introducing the practice to numerous celebrities and helping to popularize it in the United States.
