Ilya Prigogine

Chemist

Ilya Prigogine was a Belgian physical chemist and Nobel laureate noted for his work on dissipative structures, complex systems, and irreversibility. Born in Moscow, his family left Russia in 1921 and eventually settled in Belgium, where he studied and spent most of his career. He received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1977 for his contributions to non-equilibrium thermodynamics, particularly the theory of dissipative structures. His work fundamentally changed the scientific understanding of time, chaos, and the role of irreversibility in natural processes.
