Hu Shih was a highly influential Chinese philosopher, writer, and diplomat during the Republican era. He was a key contributor to Chinese liberalism and language reform, advocating for the use of vernacular Chinese in literature. As a leading figure in China's New Culture Movement, he promoted pragmatism and a critical, scientific approach to China's traditions. Later in his career, he served as the Republic of China's ambassador to the United States and as the president of Academia Sinica in Taiwan.
