Henry IV, born Henry Bolingbroke, was King of England from 1399 to 1413, founding the House of Lancaster. He seized the throne from his cousin, Richard II, an act that precipitated decades of conflict known as the Wars of the Roses. His reign was fraught with challenges, including numerous rebellions, parliamentary discord, and severe health problems. Despite the turmoil, he successfully secured the crown for his descendants, passing it to his celebrated son, Henry V.
