Helen Brooke Taussig was a pioneering American cardiologist and the founder of the field of pediatric cardiology. She is best known for her groundbreaking work on 'blue baby syndrome,' a congenital heart defect called Tetralogy of Fallot. Collaborating with surgeon Alfred Blalock and technician Vivien Thomas, she developed the concept for the Blalock-Thomas-Taussig shunt procedure, which saved the lives of countless infants. Her later work included raising awareness about the dangers of the drug thalidomide, preventing a major birth defect crisis in the United States.
