Harry Hay was a pioneering American gay rights activist, labor advocate, and Communist Party member. He is best known as a co-founder of the Mattachine Society in 1950, one of the first and most influential gay rights organizations in the United States. His work laid crucial groundwork for the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement, challenging societal norms and advocating for homosexuals as a cultural minority. Later in life, he co-founded the Radical Faeries, a counter-cultural spiritual movement aimed at exploring and celebrating queer consciousness.
