Hanns Johst was a German playwright, novelist, and poet who became a prominent and influential cultural figure in Nazi Germany. Initially an Expressionist writer, his work evolved to embrace the Blut und Boden (Blood and Soil) ideology of the Nazi party. He served as the President of the Reich Chamber of Literature and the Reich Theatre Chamber, controlling literary and theatrical output. Johst is most infamous for a line in his 1933 play 'Schlageter', which is often paraphrased and misattributed to other Nazi leaders.
