Gwen John was a Welsh artist who worked in France for most of her career. Her paintings, mostly portraits of anonymous female sitters, are rendered in a quiet, tonal style. She was the older sister of the painter Augustus John and was for a time the model and lover of the sculptor Auguste Rodin. Although overshadowed during her lifetime by her brother and Rodin, her reputation has grown steadily since her death.
