George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham, was an English courtier, statesman, and patron of the arts. He was a favourite and possibly the lover of King James I of England. Despite a meteoric rise to power, his political and military failures made him widely unpopular among the English public and parliament. His influence continued under James's successor, Charles I, until he was assassinated by a disgruntled army officer.
