George Farquhar

Playwright

George Farquhar was a prominent Irish dramatist known for his contributions to late Restoration comedy. Born in Derry, he initially pursued a career at Trinity College, Dublin, before turning to acting and eventually playwriting in London. His most famous works, "The Recruiting Officer" and "The Beaux' Stratagem," are celebrated for their wit, realism, and departure from the cynical tone of earlier Restoration plays. Despite a career cut tragically short by his early death, Farquhar's plays remain influential and are still performed today.
