Franklin Pierce

Politician

Franklin Pierce was the 14th President of the United States, serving from 1853 to 1857. A northern Democrat who saw the abolitionist movement as a threat to national unity, he signed the controversial Kansas-Nebraska Act, which inflamed sectional tensions. His presidency is widely considered a failure for exacerbating the divisions that led to the Civil War. After leaving office, he fell into alcoholism and public obscurity, dying in 1869.
