Francis Scott Key was an American lawyer, author, and amateur poet best known for writing the lyrics to the U.S. national anthem, 'The Star-Spangled Banner'. During the War of 1812, he witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry and was inspired to write the poem 'Defence of Fort M'Henry' after seeing the American flag still flying at dawn. The poem was later set to the tune of a popular British song and was officially adopted as the national anthem in 1931. Beyond his famous poem, Key had a successful legal career and was involved in several prominent cases of his era.
