Francesca da Rimini

Historical Figure

Francesca da Rimini was a 13th-century Italian noblewoman, celebrated in history and literature for her tragic love affair. Born into the da Polenta family of Ravenna, she was married for political reasons to the disfigured Giovanni Malatesta, lord of Rimini. She fell in love with her husband's handsome younger brother, Paolo Malatesta, and they began a clandestine affair. Their romance ended in tragedy when Giovanni discovered them together and murdered them both, a story immortalized by Dante Alighieri in his Inferno.
