Born in Cartagena, Spain, he served as Director General of Public Health and Social Services for Catalonia during the Spanish Civil War before emigrating to the United States in 1939. In the U.S., he founded the highly influential medical journal MD and the publishing house MD Publications, which aimed to bridge the gap between science and the humanities. His extensive writings, including the book A Prelude to Medical History, explored the rich tapestry of medicine's past and its profound connection to art, culture, and philosophy.
