Eugene Victor Debs was a prominent American socialist, political activist, and trade unionist. He was one of the founding members of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) and a five-time candidate for President of the United States with the Socialist Party of America. Through his presidential candidacies and work with labor movements, Debs became one of the most well-known socialists in the United States. He was famously imprisoned for his opposition to U.S. involvement in World War I, delivering a powerful anti-war speech that led to his conviction under the Espionage Act of 1917.
