Erwin Chargaff

Biochemist

Erwin Chargaff was an Austro-Hungarian-born American biochemist, writer, and professor of biochemistry at Columbia University Medical School. He is best known for his discovery of two rules, now known as Chargaff's rules, which were instrumental in deciphering the structure of DNA. These rules state that in the DNA of any species, the amount of guanine is equal to cytosine and the amount of adenine is equal to thymine. Despite his foundational contributions, he was often critical of the field of molecular biology that he helped to create, expressing profound concerns about its potential consequences.
