Ernst Ludwig Kirchner

Artist

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was a German expressionist painter and printmaker and a founding member of the artists group Die Brücke, or 'The Bridge'. As a leader in the Expressionist movement, he is renowned for his bold colors and emotionally charged depictions of cityscapes and nudes. His work was branded as 'degenerate' by the Nazi regime, which led to the confiscation and destruction of over 600 of his pieces. Deeply affected by the political situation in Germany and his own deteriorating mental health, Kirchner tragically took his own life in 1938.
