Erich Honecker

Politician

Erich Honecker was a German communist politician who led the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) from 1971 until the weeks preceding the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. As the General Secretary of the Socialist Unity Party, he oversaw a period of relative economic stability known as "consumer socialism" while maintaining strict political control. His government was responsible for the extensive surveillance of its citizens by the Stasi and a shoot-to-kill order at the Berlin Wall. Overthrown by his own party during the peaceful revolution of 1989, he eventually went into exile in Chile, where he died.
