Erich Auerbach

Literary Critic

Erich Auerbach was a German-born philologist and comparative literature scholar of Jewish descent. He is best known for his magnum opus, Mimesis: The Representation of Reality in Western Literature, a foundational text in modern literary criticism. Fleeing Nazi Germany, he found refuge in Istanbul, Turkey, where he famously wrote Mimesis without access to his personal library. He later emigrated to the United States, where he taught at Pennsylvania State University and eventually Yale University until his death.
