Eric Liddell

Athlete

Eric Henry Liddell was a Scottish Olympic gold medalist runner, Scottish rugby union international player, and devout Christian missionary. His story gained international fame through the 1981 Academy Award-winning film 'Chariots of Fire,' which depicted his athletic journey and deep religious convictions. Liddell famously refused to run in his signature 100-meter event at the 1924 Paris Olympics because the heats were held on a Sunday, choosing instead to compete and win the 400-meter race. Following his Olympic success, he returned to Northern China to serve as a missionary, where he ultimately died in a Japanese civilian internment camp during World War II.
