Elizabeth Hardwick was a highly influential American literary critic, novelist, and short story writer. Born in Lexington, Kentucky, she became a key figure in the New York intellectual scene for much of the 20th century. She was a co-founder of the prestigious publication, The New York Review of Books, in 1963 during the New York printers' strike. Her incisive essays, critical reviews, and works of fiction, including the novel Sleepless Nights, cemented her reputation as a formidable and eloquent voice in American letters.
