Elias Hicks

Religious Leader

Elias Hicks was an influential American Quaker minister and abolitionist from Long Island, New York. His teachings emphasized the "inward light" and direct, personal experience of God, which challenged more traditionalist Quaker doctrines. These theological differences led to the "Great Separation" of 1827–1828, which split the Religious Society of Friends into two factions: the Hicksites and the Orthodox Friends. Throughout his life, Hicks was also a vocal advocate for the abolition of slavery and promoted a boycott of goods produced by slave labor.
