He first found success as the lead guitarist and main songwriter for the Equals, one of the UK's first racially integrated pop groups. After leaving the band, he embarked on a successful solo career, achieving international fame with hits like 'Electric Avenue' and the anti-apartheid anthem 'Gimme Hope Jo'anna.' Beyond his music, Grant is also a successful record producer and entrepreneur, having established his own studio and record label, Ice Records.
