Dudley North

Economist

Sir Dudley North was an influential English merchant, politician, and pioneering economist of the 17th century. He spent much of his early life in Constantinople and Smyrna, amassing a considerable fortune through trade. Upon returning to England, he served as a commissioner of the customs and a member of parliament, applying his practical knowledge to economic theory. His most famous work, 'Discourses upon Trade,' published posthumously, argued strongly for free trade and against usury laws, marking a significant departure from mercantilist thought.
