He became a prominent leader among the Covenanters, who opposed the Royalist attempts to impose Episcopalianism on Scotland. Cargill is most famous for his role in the Sanquhar Declaration of 1680, which renounced allegiance to King Charles II. For his defiance, he was captured, tried for treason, and executed in Edinburgh, becoming a martyr for the Covenanter cause.
