Desmond Dekker was a pioneering Jamaican ska, rocksteady, and reggae singer-songwriter and musician. Born Desmond Adolphus Dacres in Kingston, he became one of the first international superstars produced by the island's vibrant music scene. His 1968 hit 'Israelites' was one of the first reggae songs to become a major global success, topping charts in the UK and reaching the top ten in the United States. Along with his backing group the Aces, Dekker's music defined the sound of early reggae and greatly influenced subsequent genres like punk and ska revival.
