“The tradition of the music is the foundation, and you can't build a house without a strong foundation.”

“Improvisation is not just about playing the right notes, it’s about listening and responding.”

“For me, the bass is the anchor of the band. It's the foundation upon which everything else is built.”

“The goal is to be open to the music and let it guide you, rather than trying to force your own ideas onto it.”

“Collaboration is at the heart of jazz. It’s a conversation between the musicians.”

“You have to keep challenging yourself, otherwise you become stagnant.”

“The music itself is the teacher. If you listen carefully, it will tell you what it needs.”

“My role as a bandleader is to create a context where everybody can be themselves and play their best.”

“A great rhythm section is one that breathes together.”

“Every note has a purpose and a place.”

“The search is the important thing. That's the part that's enjoyable.”
