Cyrus Vance

Diplomat

Cyrus Roberts Vance was a prominent American lawyer and diplomat who served as the 57th United States Secretary of State under President Jimmy Carter from 1977 to 1980. Prior to this role, he held numerous positions in the U.S. government, including Secretary of the Army and Deputy Secretary of Defense. As Secretary of State, Vance was a key figure in negotiating the Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel and the SALT II treaty with the Soviet Union. He famously resigned in protest of Operation Eagle Claw, the failed secret mission to rescue American hostages in Iran, believing it was a diplomatic failure.
