Cotton Mather was a socially and politically influential New England Puritan minister, prolific author, and pamphleteer. Born in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, he was the son of minister Increase Mather and followed his father into the clergy. He is remembered for his vigorous support for the Salem witch trials, a position he later somewhat moderated, and for his scientific advocacy of inoculation against smallpox. Mather's extensive writings, including over 450 books and pamphlets, left a significant mark on the religious and intellectual history of colonial America.
