Claiborne Fox Jackson was an American politician and lawyer who served as the 15th Governor of Missouri in 1861. A staunch pro-slavery Democrat, he played a pivotal role in the state's secession crisis at the beginning of the American Civil War. After attempting to lead Missouri into the Confederacy, he was deposed by the Union-supported provisional government. Jackson then established a government-in-exile and served as a Confederate governor until his death from stomach cancer in 1862.
