Charles Vincent Massey was a distinguished Canadian lawyer, diplomat, and statesman who served as the 18th Governor General of Canada. He was the first Canadian-born individual to hold this prestigious office, serving from 1952 to 1959. Before his vice-regal appointment, Massey had an extensive diplomatic career, notably as the first Canadian envoy to Washington and later as High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. He is also remembered for chairing the Royal Commission on National Development in the Arts, Letters and Sciences, whose 1951 report was foundational for Canadian cultural policy.
