Charles Gates Dawes was an American financier, diplomat, and Republican politician who served as the 30th Vice President of the United States from 1925 to 1929. For his work on the Dawes Plan for World War I reparations, he was a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1925. He also served as the U.S. Comptroller of the Currency, the first director of the Bureau of the Budget, and later as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom. Dawes remains the only vice president to have written a number one pop song, 'Melody in A Major,' which became a hit years later.
