Cesare Lombroso

Criminologist

Cesare Lombroso was an Italian criminologist, physician, and founder of the Italian School of Positivist Criminology. He is widely considered one of the fathers of modern criminology for his theory of anthropological criminology, which suggested that criminality was inherited and that someone 'born criminal' could be identified by physical defects. His most famous work, 'L'Uomo Delinquente' (The Criminal Man), outlined his controversial concepts, such as atavistic stigmata, which he believed were indicators of primitive traits. Although his theories are now largely discredited for their scientific flaws, Lombroso's work shifted the study of crime from a legalistic focus to a scientific one.
