Carl Schurz was a German revolutionary who later became a prominent American statesman, reformer, and journalist. After emigrating to the United States, he served as a Union Army general during the Civil War, contributing significantly to the war effort. Following the war, he was elected as a U.S. Senator from Missouri and later appointed as the Secretary of the Interior under President Rutherford B. Hayes. Throughout his career, Schurz was a dedicated advocate for civil service reform, anti-imperialism, and the rights of Native Americans.
