Caecilius Statius

Playwright

Caecilius Statius was a prominent Roman comic poet and playwright of the 2nd century BC. Originally an Insubrian Gaul from northern Italy, he was likely brought to Rome as a prisoner of war and became a slave before being freed. He was a friend and contemporary of the poet Ennius and is considered one of the great masters of Roman comedy alongside Plautus and Terence. Although his works were highly esteemed in antiquity, only fragments of his comedies survive today.
