Boutros Boutros-Ghali

Diplomat

Boutros Boutros-Ghali was an Egyptian politician and diplomat who served as the sixth Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1992 to 1996. A member of a prominent Coptic Christian family, he had a long career as a jurist, academic, and foreign minister of Egypt before his UN tenure. During his time as Secretary-General, he oversaw several major world events, including the breakup of Yugoslavia and the Rwandan genocide. His term was marked by controversies with the United States, which ultimately vetoed his bid for a second term, making him the only UN Secretary-General not to be re-elected.
