Benjamin Lincoln

Military Officer

Benjamin Lincoln was a prominent American army officer who served as a major general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. He is remembered for his involvement in three major surrenders: his own at Charleston in 1780, the British surrender at Saratoga, and officially accepting Cornwallis's sword at Yorktown. After the war, Lincoln served as the first United States Secretary of War under the Articles of Confederation from 1781 to 1783. He later led the Massachusetts militia that suppressed Shays' Rebellion and remained an active figure in public service until his death.
