Avery Brundage was an American sports administrator who served as the fifth President of the International Olympic Committee from 1952 to 1972. As an athlete, he competed in the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm in the pentathlon and decathlon events. Throughout his controversial tenure as IOC President, he was a staunch advocate for amateurism in sports and strongly opposed the commercialization of the Olympic Games. His presidency is also remembered for his handling of major political crises, including the 1972 Munich massacre and the exclusion of apartheid-era South Africa.
