Augustus Baldwin Longstreet was an influential American educator, lawyer, author, and Methodist minister. Born in Augusta, Georgia, he became a prominent figure in the intellectual and religious life of the antebellum South. He is best remembered for his book 'Georgia Scenes, Characters, Incidents, &c. in the First Half Century of the Republic,' a significant work of Southern humor and local color writing. Throughout his distinguished career, Longstreet also served as the president of several prominent southern universities, including Emory College and the University of Mississippi.
