Arthur Scargill

Trade Unionist

Arthur Scargill is a British trade unionist and politician who served as President of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) from 1982 to 2002. He is best known for leading the union during the contentious and pivotal UK miners' strike of 1984–85. His uncompromising stance against Margaret Thatcher's Conservative government made him a highly prominent but also deeply divisive figure in British politics. After his time with the NUM, he founded and led the Socialist Labour Party, continuing his lifelong advocacy for socialist principles.
