Anita Brookner was an English novelist and art historian, born in London to Polish-Jewish immigrants. She taught at the Courtauld Institute of Art and was the first woman to be named Slade Professor of Fine Art at the University of Cambridge. Her literary career flourished after winning the 1984 Booker Prize for her fourth novel, 'Hotel du Lac'. Brookner's novels are celebrated for their elegant prose and introspective explorations of loneliness, emotional loss, and the constrained lives of women.
