“The one thing my works are not is shocking.”

“I don't think I'm a controversial artist. I'm an artist who has been in controversies.”

“I feel it's my responsibility as an artist to be a witness to my time.”

“When I did 'Piss Christ', I wasn't trying to be provocative. I was just trying to make a beautiful picture.”

“I am not an iconoclast. I'm a devout Catholic.”

“It is my right to express myself, and I have chosen to express myself in my art.”

“For me, art is a moral obligation.”

“My work has always been about life and death, and it's also been about beauty.”

“I've never been interested in 'the shock of the new'. I'm interested in the newness of the old.”

“At the time I made 'Piss Christ,' I wasn't trying to get anything across. The truth is, I'm not an artist with a message.”
