Allan Pinkerton

Detective

Allan Pinkerton was a Scottish-American detective and spy, best known for creating the Pinkerton National Detective Agency. He pioneered many detective techniques still in use today, including shadowing and the use of mug shots. During the American Civil War, he served as the head of the Union Intelligence Service, thwarting an assassination plot against Abraham Lincoln. His agency's logo, an unblinking eye with the motto 'We Never Sleep,' gave rise to the term 'private eye'.
