Aleksandr Ivanovich Lebed was a prominent Russian military officer and politician who played a significant role in the country's post-Soviet era. He gained fame for his command during the Soviet-Afghan War and later for helping to quell the 1991 August Coup attempt against Mikhail Gorbachev. After retiring from the military, he entered politics, placing third in the 1996 presidential election and later brokering a peace deal to end the First Chechen War. Lebed served as the governor of Krasnoyarsk Krai until his death in a helicopter crash in 2002, leaving a complex legacy as a tough-talking nationalist.
