Akihito

Emperor Emeritus

Akihito served as the 125th Emperor of Japan from 1989 until his historic abdication in 2019. He was the first Japanese monarch to abdicate the Chrysanthemum Throne in over two centuries. Throughout his reign, known as the Heisei era, he sought to bring the Imperial Family closer to the Japanese people and made efforts to heal the wounds of World War II. As Emperor Emeritus, he has stepped back from official duties, which are now carried out by his son, Emperor Naruhito.
